Surge a música de protesto, com Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Peter, Paul and Mary, entre outros, já nos primeiros anos da década.
O Rock and Roll ganha crescente popularidade no mundo, associando-se ao final da década à rebeldia política.
No início da década o rock recebeu no Brasil o nome de iê-iê-iê, uma livre tradução do refrão da música She Loves You, dos Beatles: "She Loves You, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!".
Na música erudita, começa a se desenvolver o minimalismo, a partir das obras de Philip Glass.
Em 1963 surge o Clube da Esquina, importante conjunto musical mineiro, com Milton Nascimento e os irmãos Borges.
Chega aos cinemas em 1964 o primeiro filme dos Beatles, A Hard Day's Night. No Brasil recebeu o nome Os Reis do Iê, Iê, Iê.
Em 1965 Elis Regina interpreta Arrastão, de Vinícius de Moraes e Edu Lobo, e com isso surge a MPB, ou Música Popular Brasileira, no Festival de Música Popular Brasileira da TV Record.
O programa Jovem Guarda estréia em 1965, apresentado por Roberto Carlos, Erasmo Carlos e Wanderléa. O programa de tevê acaba gerando o movimento com o mesmo nome, onde os jovens tiveram pela primeira vez um espaço, lhes permitindo uma identidade própria, pois foi a primeira vez que se era dedicada aos adolescentes uma parte do cenário cultural.
Em 1966, Chico Buarque se revela ao público brasileiro com a canção, "A Banda", interpretada por Nara Leão, durante o Festival de Música Popular Brasileira, transmitido pela TV Record (a canção empata em primeiro lugar com "Disparada" de Geraldo Vandré).
Surge o Movimento Tropicália, em 1967. Com Caetano Veloso e Gilberto Gil, além de Os mutantes, Tom Zé e Torquato Neto.

Em 1967 os Beatles lançam aquele que é considerado o melhor álbum da história: Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. O álbum se tornou um dos discos mais vendidos da história e tido como o mais influente.
Ainda em 1967, surge o primeiro festival de rock Monterey Pop Festival, ou Festival Pop de Monterey, na California. Organizado por Lou Adler, John Phillips (The Mamas & The Papas) e Derek Taylor o festival foi a estréia de The Jimi Hendrix Experience, com Jimi Hendrix; Big Brother and the Holding Company, com Janis Joplin e Otis Redding.
Em 1969 ocorre o Festival de Woodstock, nos EUA, com apresentações ao vivo de Jimi Hendrix, Creedence Clearwater Revival, The Who, Sly and Family Stone, Carlos Santana, entre outros lendários do rock clássico.
A música da década de 60
A cultura musical brasileira acompanhou todas as mudanças dessa época, surgindo assim à afirmação da bossa nova e o surgimento das músicas de cunho social apresentadas principalmente nos “Festivais de Música Brasileira”, principalmente os da TV Excelsior e TV Record; assim surgiram composições sociais de Sérgio Ricardo, Gilberto Gil, Chico Buarque de Holanda, Caetano Veloso, Geraldo Vandré, Teo de Barros, Torquato Neto, Heraldo do Monte, Airto Moreira, Hilton Acioli e muitos outros.
Compositores não engajados nos movimentos sociais também passaram a compor músicas de fundo social em função da censura imposta pelos governos militares da época.
A grande divulgação de cantores americanos de rock através do cinema e gravadoras ajudou também o nascimento do rock brasileiro com ampla divulgação da mídia nos anos 60; um dos principais incentivadores foi o compositor e radialista Carlos Imperial que fundou em 1958 o Clube do Rock, no Rio de Janeiro, onde se apresentavam e se reuniam os amantes do rock; nesse clube iniciaram suas carreiras Roberto Carlos e Erasmo Carlos.
A parcela de público que preferia músicas oriundas do rock passou a ter seu espaço musical com programas específicos na televisão cujo ápice foi o programa “Jovem Guarda” iniciado em 1965 com Roberto, Erasmo e Vanderléia permanecendo no ar pela TV Record durante vários anos.

Sob influência da Jovem Guarda e dos Beatles nasceu em 1967 o Tropicalismo, movimento de vanguarda liderado por Caetano Veloso, Rogério Duprat, Gilberto Gil, Júlio Medaglia e outros; suas principais composições foram
" Tropicália“ "Domingo no Parque” e “Alegria, Alegria” onde era incentivada a universalização da música brasileira inclusive com utilização de guitarras elétricas e absorção de vários gêneros musicais: pop-rock, música de vanguarda, frevo, samba, bolero, etc.
Assim na década de 60 três novas grandes vertentes musicais podem ser identificadas : bossa nova, músicas sociais de festivais e rock da jovem guarda; evidentemente músicas com ritmos tradicionais como samba, samba canção, músicas de carnaval e músicas regionais continuaram a ter seu espaço mas com menos divulgação e menor sucesso que as três citadas.

In 1963 comes the Clube da Esquina, a leading musical group miner, with Milton Nascimento Borges and brothers.
